We trust this newsletter finds you well.

US stocks had a wild week of trading with the S&P500 having its worst day since 2022 and then its best day since 2022. Treasury yields dropped and the VIX index hit its highest level since 2020. Although it was a roller coaster week, the markets did end up stabilizing by week end with the S&P500 only being down .1%.

If you’re feeling concerned about these market swings, you’re not alone. We want to explain what’s happening and help you figure out the best way forward.

So what’s happening? The markets are facing some challenges right now?

1) Slower job market growth. Recent reports showed fewer jobs being added than anticipated.
2) Recession concerns. Lingering anxieties about a possible recession are impacting investor sentiment.
3) Uncertainty around interest rates. The Fed is still figuring out its next move on interest rates, which is affecting borrowing and spending.
4) Disappointing corporate earnings. Some major companies have reported weaker than expected earnings, leading to declines in their stock prices.

What does this mean for you?

Market downturns can indeed be unsettling, but it’s important to keep things in perspective:

Short-Term vs Long-Term: While short-term market fluctuations can be concerning, it’s essential to focus on your long-term financial goals. Historical trends show that markets tend to recover over time, and while past performance of the markets doesn’t offer any guarantees, it does give us perspective.

Stay Calm and Invest Wisely: Avoid making impulse decisions based on short-term market fluctuations. Instead, focus on maintaining a well-diversified portfolio that aligns with your long-term objectives and risk tolerance.
